The Process:

The Concept

Have you ever just wanted to jump into a painting? Well, that is the basic conceptual idea of Painting Portals,  to reshape paintings into dynamic versions with movement and user immersion. This experience could be treated as a fully immersive adventure or purely as a virtual art gallery. The goal of this project was to transform the gallery experience into a digital one. One of the main inspirations was drawn from Super Mario 64 and the normal experience of walking through a gallery or a museum.

Project Assets

A variety of object assets were used including a variety of paintings to offer users different experiences, some being abstract paintings while others being still life paintings. Other objects included items that would replicate the paintings closely including textures and colors.

The Progress

Various steps were involved in this project that were all done on Unreal Engine. A lot of time was put into making each room unique and a close representation of the painting while some work was spent on the user's movements within the virtual world. These progression photos demonstrate the different elements eventually compiling into a functional experience!

The Challenges

Some successes happened as well such as separating the paintings and objects so as to avoid colliding with the user. Another great success was having the painting wall material move to make the rooms more dynamic and immersive.

The Successes

There were a few initial challenges along the way such as making the material merge with one another to make a seamless transition. Other challenges were familiarizing with the VR headset and changing the settings to allow the user to move within the exhibit.
